TriStar Productions (TSP) is an American film and television production company, a division of TriStar Pictures and a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and former 20th Century Fox chairman Tom Rothman.[4]

The new company shares its name and logo with the current TriStar Pictures distribution label of Sony Pictures,[4] under which TriStar Productions' four films per year will be released joining the other titles released from Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.[2][5] The television programming however, will be produced for Sony Pictures Television.[2] The TriStar name was selected as Rothman considers himself a film buff, giving the company its historical name, and counting on the good will of the Hollywood creative types to give the unit an edge.[5]

In this role, Rothman oversees all of the studio's motion picture production and distribution activities worldwide, including Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Classics, 3000 Pictures, Sony Pictures International Productions, Stage 6 Films, AFFIRM Films. Rothman joined Sony Pictures in late-2013 as chairman of TriStar Productions and in 2015 was promoted to Chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, followed by the release in 2017 and 2018 of titles such as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Venom, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Peter Rabbit, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Under Rothman's leadership, the Motion Picture Group was returned to strong profitability and experienced several of its most profitable years in history with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Little Women. Driven by tentpoles such as Spider-Man: Far From Home, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Bad Boys For Life, fiscal year 2020 was the film studio's best in over a decade in terms of both ultimate profitability and operating income.

History

It was jointly announced on August 1, 2013, by Rothman, Michael Lynton, the CEO of Sony Entertainment and co-chairman and CEO of SPE, and Amy Pascal, co-chairwoman of SPE. The venture was launched on September 1 and Rothman would hold an equity share in the venture with the ability to bring in other outside investments.[4][5] TriStar Productions' first deal was for the autobiography To Walk the Clouds, which is about Philippe Petit, a French high wire walker who walked between the Twin Towers in 1974.[6]

In February 2015, it was announced that Rothman will replace Amy Pascal as chairman of Sony Pictures's Motion Picture Group. Rothman will continue to oversee the properties he greenlit at TriStar.[7]

She has overseen the production and distribution of many films and television programs, and was co-chairperson during the late-2014 Sony Pictures hack. The leak uncovered multiple emails from Pascal which were deemed racially insensitive. She left Sony and Pascal later admitted that she was fired from the company.

Philippe Petit

Philippe Petit is a French high-wire artist who gained fame for his unauthorized high-wire walks between the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 1971 and of Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1973, as well as between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on the morning of 7 August 1974. For his unauthorized feat 400 metres above the ground – which he referred to as "le coup" – he rigged a 200-kilogram (440-pound) cable and used a custom-made 8-metre (30-foot) long, 25-kilogram (55-pound) balancing pole. He performed for 45 minutes, making eight passes along the wire.
