The KO-D (King of DDT) 10-Man Tag Team Championship (Japanese: KO-D10人タッグ王座, Hepburn: KO-D Jū-nin Taggu Ōza) is a professional wrestling championship owned by the DDT Pro-Wrestling promotion. Meant for teams of five wrestlers, the title is believed to be the first of its kind in professional wrestling.[2] The title was first announced on April 30, 2017,[1] with the inaugural champions crowned on August 20, 2017.[3] A unique aspect of the title is that each belt has a different color strap; one belt has a red strap, one blue, one green, one yellow and one pink (retired for the 8-man version).

Like most professional wrestling championships, the title is won as a result of a scripted match. As of June 25, 2022, there have been a total of eight reigns shared between eight different teams consisting of thirty-two distinctive champions and two vacancies. The current holders are Mao, Yuki Ueno, Shunma Katsumata and Toui Kojima from The37Kamiina, and Shinya Aoki who are in their first reign as a team, with Aoki being in his second individual reign.

Japanese language

Japanese language

Japanese is spoken as a native language by about 128 million people, primarily Japanese people and primarily in Japan, the only country where it is the national language. Japanese belongs to the Japonic or Japanese-Ryukyuan language family. There have been many attempts to group the Japonic languages with other families such as the Ainu, Austroasiatic, Koreanic, and the now-discredited Altaic, but none of these proposals has gained widespread acceptance.

Hepburn romanization

Hepburn romanization

Hepburn romanization is the most widely used system of romanization for the Japanese language. Originally published in 1867 by American missionary James Curtis Hepburn as the standard in the first edition of his Japanese–English dictionary, the system is distinct from other romanization methods in its use of English orthography to phonetically transcribe sounds: for example, the syllable [ɕi] is written as shi and [tɕa] is written as cha, reflecting their spellings in English.

Professional wrestling

Professional wrestling is a form of theater that revolves around mock combat matches that are usually performed in a ring similar to the kind used in boxing. In 2017, DDT was sold to CyberAgent. Takagi retained his position, while Takahiro Yamauchi took over as the new DDT director.

Professional wrestling promotion

A professional wrestling promotion is a company or business that regularly performs shows involving professional wrestling that has little relationship to the rules of the amateur olympic form. "Promotion" also describes a role which entails management, advertising and logistics of running a wrestling event. Within the convention of the show, the company is a sports governing body which sanctions wrestling matches and gives authority to the championships and is responsible for maintaining the divisions and their rankings. In truth, the company serves as a touring theatre troupe, as well as event promotion body for its own events.

Title history

Recognizing the difficulty of scheduling matches for the title, DDT announced that as long as the captain of the reigning champions and two other members are present, title matches can be held with two replacement members taking the other two spots in the team. These replacement members would, however, not be recognized as official champions.[4]

On December 21, 2020, the title was vacated and became the KO-D 8-Man Tag Team Championship due to the difficulty of scheduling a proper title defense during the COVID-19 pandemic.[5][6]

On February 14, 2021, at Kawasaki Strong 2021, the team of Shinya Aoki, Super Sasadango Machine, Antonio Honda and Kazuki Hirata won the vacant title.[7] On March 28, at Judgement, they lost the title in their first defense against Team Thoroughbred (Sanshiro Takagi, Yukio Naya, Chikara [ja] and Yakan Nabe [ja]).[8] On December 28, it was announced that the title would revert back to its original 10-man tag team form with the team of Sanshiro Takagi, Akito, Soma Takao, Gota Ihashi and Yuki Ishida challenging in a 5-on-4 handicap match on January 3, 2022.[9]
