History

Ideal had in its origins in the Catholic and conservative daily La Gaceta del Sur, which had disappeared in 1931. The Catholic hierarchy of Granada decided to launch a new newspaper, counting on the collaboration of journalists such as Ángel Herrera Oria y de Pedro Gómez Aparicio.[5] The newspaper went to the streets for the first time on May 8, 1932.[6] It was edited by Editorial Católica.[7] In these early years of existence was a clearly confessional and conservative newspaper,[8] and its main journalistic rival was the liberal El Defensor de Granada.[9] In the context of the 1930s, Ideal was the best manufactured newspaper in the province,[10] surpassing others published in this period.[b] During this era, it highlighted the work of Ramón Ruiz Alonso,[10] the paper's typographer.[12] During the years of the Second Republic the publication, which reached a circulation of 9000 copies,[13] according to CEDA.[14]

On 10 March 1936 a group of right wing supporters [c] set fire to the offices of Ideal, whose printing press was destroyed and the premises reduced to the foundations. [16] As a consequence, the newspaper did not circulate for some months. In early July, the newspaper returned to Granada, shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.

Spanish Civil War

Spanish Civil War

The Spanish Civil War was a civil war in Spain fought from 1936 to 1939 between the Republicans and the Nationalists. Republicans were loyal to the left-leaning Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic, and consisted of various socialist, communist, separatist, anarchist, and republican parties, some of which had opposed the government in the pre-war period. The opposing Nationalists were an alliance of Falangists, monarchists, conservatives, and traditionalists led by a military junta among whom General Francisco Franco quickly achieved a preponderant role. Due to the international political climate at the time, the war had many facets and was variously viewed as class struggle, a religious struggle, a struggle between dictatorship and republican democracy, between revolution and counterrevolution, and between fascism and communism. According to Claude Bowers, U.S. ambassador to Spain during the war, it was the "dress rehearsal" for World War II. The Nationalists won the war, which ended in early 1939, and ruled Spain until Franco's death in November 1975.
