It is one of the largest, serving more than 220,000 students each year in Maricopa County, Arizona. The district serves Maricopa County, the county that includes and surrounds Phoenix and is the most populous of the state's counties. The district's administrative headquarters are located in Tempe, Arizona.

History

CGCC was founded in 1985 as an extension of Mesa Community College. It was later independently accredited in 1992.[2]

The college is divided into divisions, which are Aviation and Applied Technology Division, Biological Sciences Division, Business and Computing Studies Division, Communication and Fine Arts Division, Composition, Creative Writing and Literature Division, Modern Languages and Humanities Division, Social and Behavioral Sciences Division, Mathematics Division, Nursing Division, and Health Sciences Division, Physical Sciences and Engineering Division, and Library, Learning Center, and Counseling Division.

The college athletics teams are nicknamed the Coyotes.

Dennis Scott Sarfate is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played for the Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, and Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Hiroshima Toyo Carp, Saitama Seibu Lions, and Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). While an average reliever in the MLB, Sarfate became one of the greatest closers in NPB history after moving his career overseas. Sarfate holds several NPB records, including most saves in a season and most by a foreign-born pitcher. As of 2020, his 234 career saves rank fifth-most in NPB history. He is a 3× NPB All-Star, a 3× Pacific League saves leader, a 5× Japan Series Champion, won the Japan Series Most Valuable Player Award, won the Pacific League MVP Award, and won the Matsutaro Shoriki Award.
