Kypuche (Ukrainian: Кипуче), formerly known as Artemovsk / Artemivsk (Ukrainian: Артемівськ, translit.: Artemivs’k, Russian: Артёмовск) is a city in the Perevalsk Raion of Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Population: 7,162 (2022 est.)[1], 7,506 (2013 est.)[2].

The city has been under the control of the Lugansk People's Republic since 2014.

The city is located some 60k from Bakhmut, which was also formerly known as Artemovsk.

Perevalsk Raion was a raion (district) in the eastern Ukrainian province of Luhansk, Donbas. The raion was abolished on 18 July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Luhansk Oblast to eight. However, since 2014 the raion was not under control of Ukrainian government and has been part of the Luhansk People's Republic which continues using it as an administrative unit. The administrative center of the raion is the city of Perevalsk. The last estimate of the raion population, reported by the Ukrainian government, was 63,064 .

Bakhmut, formerly known as Artemivsk or Artyomovsk, is a city in eastern Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of Bakhmut Raion in Donetsk Oblast. It is located on the Bakhmutka River, about 89 kilometres (55 mi) north of Donetsk, the administrative center of the oblast. Bakhmut was designated a city of regional significance until 2020 when the designation was abolished. Population: 71,094.

History

The city was founded as Katerynivka (Ukrainian: Катеринівка) village in 1910 close to the railway station of Kypyche (Vigorous). Its name was changed to Artema in 1923 and to Artemivsk in 1938 in honor of Russian revolutionary and Stalinist figure Comrade Artyom.

From 2014 until its annexation by Russia in 2022, the city was occupied by pro-Russian forces of the Luhansk People's Republic.[3]

On May 12, 2016, Ukraine's national parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, decided to restore the name of Kypuche as part of the country's decommunization process.[4][5] However, the local authorities did not recognize the name change and Russia has continued not to after annexation.

Economy

Its major industry is coal mining. Southeast of Artemivsk.
