Al-Riyadh Saudi Club (Arabic: نادي الرياض السعودي) is a football team based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that is currently playing in the Saudi first division (second level). It was established in 1953 as Ahli Al-Riyadh, then changed to Al-Yamamah and finally to Al-Riyadh.

Best known for its football team, Al-Riyadh also have squads in other sports. They have won two major titles: a Crown Prince Cup in 1994 and a Crown Prince Cup in 1995; they also finished runners-up in the Saudi Premier League in 1994.

History

Early history

The club was founded in 1953 under the name "Ahli Al-Riyadh", before changing to "Al-Yamama" and then to "Al-Riyadh"; it is currently based in west Riyadh.[2]

Golden Area

In the early-1990s, under the leadership of Brazilian coach Zumario and players such as Khalid Al-Qarouni, Talal Al-Jabreen, Yasser Al-Taafi and Fahd Al-Hamdan, Al-Riyadh won the Crown Prince Cup in 1994 and reached the semi-final of Asian Cup Winners' Cup in 1995.

It was the oldest domestic football competition in Saudi Arabia, its first edition was held in 1956–57, but was not crowned from 1975 until 1990. The 1996 Arab Super Cup was an international club competition played by the winners and runners up of the Arab Club Champions Cup and Arab Cup Winners' Cup. It was the third edition of the tournament to be played. Espérance de Tunis were crowned champions, with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Riyadh runner up. Also represented were Al-Hilal, also of Saudi Arabia. It is unclear why Al-Riyadh took part in the competition as they weren't represented as either champions or runners up of the Arab Club Champions Cup or Arab Cup Winners' Cup.

The Saudi Second Division, also known as the Second Division League (SDL), is a football league that is the third tier of the Saudi Arabian football league system. The league consists of 32 teams divided into two groups and was founded in 1976.
