Nicholls State University

Nicholls State University is a public university in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Founded in 1948, Nicholls is part of the University of Louisiana System. Originally named Francis T. Nicholls Junior College, the university is named for Francis T. The 2023 NCAA Division I baseball season, play of college baseball in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level, began on February 17, 2023. The ongoing regular season will be followed by many conference tournaments and championship series, and the season concludes with the 2023 NCAA Division I baseball tournament and 2023 Men's College World Series. The Men's College World Series, consisting of the eight remaining teams in the NCAA tournament and held annually in Omaha, Nebraska, at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, will end in June 2023.

Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field is a baseball venue in Thibodaux, Louisiana, United States. It is home to the Nicholls Colonels baseball team of the NCAA Division I Southland Conference. Opened in 1960, the venue has a capacity of 2,100 spectators. The grandstand features chairback seating and a pressbox. The field is named after Raymond E. Didier, head baseball coach from 1964 to 1973 and athletic director from 1963 to 1978. The diamond is named in honor of Ben Meyer.

Mike Silva

Michael Silva is an American baseball coach and former catcher, who is the current head baseball coach of the Nicholls Colonels. Silva has been a baseball coach in the South Central United States since 2003, after playing three years of college baseball at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

Southland Conference

Southland Conference

The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Southland sponsors 18 sports, 10 for women and eight for men, and is governed by a presidential Board of Directors and an Advisory Council of athletic and academic administrators. Chris Grant became the Southland's seventh commissioner on April 5, 2022. From 1996 to 2002, for football only, the Southland Conference was known as the Southland Football League.

Previous season

The Colonels had an overall season record of 26–25 and a conference record of 12–12 finishing tied for fourth place in the Southland Conference.[5] They participated in the 2022 Southland Conference baseball tournament as the fourth seeded team. After winning their first conference tournament game against Northwestern State, the Colonels' season ended after losing to first seed McNeese and eighth seed Incarnate Word.[6]

2022 Southland Conference baseball tournament

The 2022 Southland Conference baseball tournament will be held from May 19 through 21 and May 26 to 28. The top eight regular season finishers of the league's thirteen teams will meet in the double-elimination tournament. The first round will be held at the home fields of the top two seeds, while the finals will be held at the home field of the top remaining seed. The winner of the tournament will earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division I baseball tournament.

An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. As an outfielder, their duty is to catch fly balls and ground balls then to return them to the infield for the out or before the runner advances, if there are any runners on the bases. As an outfielder, they normally play behind the six players located in the field. By convention, each of the nine defensive positions in baseball is numbered. The outfield positions are 7, 8 and 9. Opened in 1960, the venue has a capacity of 2,100 spectators. The grandstand features chairback seating and a pressbox. The field is named after Raymond E. Didier, head baseball coach from 1964 to 1973 and athletic director from 1963 to 1978. The diamond is named in honor of Ben Meyer.
