2022 NCAA Division I FBS football season

The 2022 NCAA Division I FBS football season was the 153rd season of college football in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at its highest level of competition, the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The regular season began on August 27 and ended on December 10. The postseason began on December 16, and, aside from any all-star games that are scheduled, ended on January 9, 2023, with the College Football Playoff National Championship at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The Georgia Bulldogs successfully defended their national championship when they defeated the TCU Horned Frogs, 65–7. It was the first time in the College Football Playoff era that a team won back-to-back championships. This was the ninth season of the College Football Playoff (CFP) system.

Previous season

The 2021 team started the season 1–6, before winning five games in a row to finish the regular season with a record of 6–6. The team went 5–3 in conference play to finish in third place in Conference USA's West Division. The Mean Green were invited to the inaugural Frisco Football Classic, losing 14–27 to the Miami RedHawks, finishing the season with an overall record of 6–7.

On October 21, 2021, North Texas accepted the invitation to join the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and will become a full-member on July 1, 2023.[1][2] The 2022 season is expected to be the program's last season as a member of Conference USA.

Sponsored by tax services and consulting firm Ryan LLC, the game was officially known as the Ryan Conference USA Football Championship Game.
