The judicial and administrative bodies of the province, in addition to the administrative offices of other minor governmental departments functioning within the province, are located in the city. The word itself is generally used to refer to the city, but may also refer to its eponymous governorate.

Named after Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, the stadium has a capacity of 22,500 people. Al-Hilal, Al Nassr and Al-Shabab play their matches in this stadium. In 1972, It hosted the opening ceremony for the Arabian Gulf Cup. In the 2011-2012 it became one of the first stadiums in the Kingdom to use electronic ticketing for the Saudi Football League.

It is 70 km (43 mi) inland from Jeddah on the Red Sea, in a narrow valley 277 m (909 ft) above sea level. Its last recorded population was 1,578,722 in 2015. Its estimated metro population in 2020 is 2.042 million, making it the third-most populated city in Saudi Arabia after Riyadh and Jeddah. Pilgrims more than triple this number every year during the Ḥajj pilgrimage, observed in the twelfth Hijri month of Dhūl-Ḥijjah.

The King Abdulaziz Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holy capital. It is the largest stadium in Mecca and is currently used mainly for football matches. The stadium holds 38,000 people, and is the home ground of Al-Wehda. The stadium was temporarily used by Jeddah clubs Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli due to stadiums in Jeddah undergoing construction, and given the proximity.
